Child & Sound is a charitable organization formed in November 1994. In January 1996 the organization achieved charitable status No 1071034, and was incorporated as Child and Sound Limited by Guarantee on 21st December 1996 Reg. No 3295933.
The objective of the Charity is to provide music, music therapy workshops and other related activities for children and adults primarily with special needs and disabilities. The workshops are held in a safe environment and led by trained music tutors. Each workshop is organized in a way that creates a relaxed, stimulating environment for participants.
The workshops seek to encourage integration between special needs and able-bodied youngsters with the aim of fostering understanding, and improving their confidence and quality of life. The workshop tutors are professional musicians and they are paid for any session they take.
The aim of Child & Sound, as with previous years, is to continually grow through securing additional funds. In the upcoming year we hope to expand to provide our service to increased boroughs in London, and then setting up an additional office in one such borough.
During the past nine years workshops have been provided in schools, hospitals and day centres. Music workshops are now provided on a weekly and monthly basis for many different groups in the local community.
Frequent workshops occur at Guys Evelina School, Tuke School, and Warwick Park School. Other venues include the Children's Pop in Centre, The Post Box Youth club; Happy faces Play Group, Black Disabled Achievers Project and the Aylesbury Day Centre.
The Saturday Play club has become an important link for many children who have been diagnosed as autistic in the boroughs of Southwark & Lambeth. Health visitors and doctors are referring families to the play club as an important source of information and support.
Last year Child and Sound commissioned Spectacle production Company to produce a promotional video documenting the services that we deliver and the impact that this work has on the lives of the youngsters that we work with. The video has now been completed and will be presented at this year AGM in May.
Child & Sound's has continued to provide "Family Fundays" in a variety of venues throughout the boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Greenwich and Redbridge. These venues include Valentine's Park, Burgess Park, Brockwell Park, Plumstead Common, and Charlton Park. Family Fun days consist of interactive percussion workshops, DJ skills workshops, face painting, Karaoke and a whole range of related family activities. The attendance has been very high and has risen to approximately 1,500 people at each venue, and has therefore proved a benefit in presenting Child & Sound to a wider audience.
Child & Sound Management Committee reflects the broad nature of our appeal as a charity. It includes disabled users who are keen and able to help in the planning of current and future activities. Child and Sound is affiliated to other organisations such as Scope, and is also a member of the London Youth (formally London Federation of Clubs for Young People).
